Foracort Inhaler is a prescription-based combination inhaler designed for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains two active ingredients: Budesonide, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the airways, and Formoterol, a long-acting beta2-agonist (LABA) that helps relax and open air passages. This synergistic formulation provides both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects, offering comprehensive management of obstructive airway diseases. It is intended for regular use to prevent symptoms and improve lung function, not for immediate relief of acute bronchospasm.

Features

  • Contains Budesonide (inhaled corticosteroid) and Formoterol (long-acting beta2-agonist)
  • Available in multiple strength variants (e.g., 100/6 mcg, 200/6 mcg, 400/6 mcg per puff)
  • Delivered via a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI)
  • Designed for twice-daily maintenance therapy
  • Includes a dose counter to track remaining medication
  • Compatible with spacer devices for improved lung deposition

Benefits

  • Provides dual-action therapy by combining anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects
  • Reduces the frequency and severity of asthma and COPD exacerbations
  • Improves overall lung function and exercise tolerance
  • Helps achieve long-term control of respiratory symptoms
  • Minimizes the need for rescue inhalers
  • Enhances quality of life by enabling better daily activity management

Common use

Foracort Inhaler is commonly prescribed for the maintenance treatment of asthma in patients requiring both inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting bronchodilator therapy. It is also indicated for symptomatic management of COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where airflow obstruction is present. It is not suitable for the relief of acute bronchospasm and should be used regularly as prescribed, even when symptoms are not present.

Dosage and direction

The dosage of Foracort Inhaler must be individualized based on disease severity and patient response. For asthma maintenance: adults and adolescents (12 years and older) typically use 1-2 inhalations twice daily. For COPD: the usual dose is 2 inhalations twice daily. Always shake the inhaler well before each use. Exhale fully away from the mouthpiece, place lips tightly around it, and inhale deeply and steadily while pressing the canister. Hold breath for about 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. Rinse mouth with water after each use to reduce the risk of oral candidiasis.

Precautions

  • Not for use in acute asthma attacks; always keep a fast-acting rescue inhaler available.
  • Patients should be monitored for any signs of systemic corticosteroid effects, especially with high doses or long-term use.
  • Caution is advised in patients with tuberculosis, fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex.
  • Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, osteoporosis, or glaucoma.
  • May cause paradoxical bronchospasm; discontinue immediately if it occurs.
  • Height monitoring is recommended in pediatric patients on prolonged corticosteroid therapy.

Contraindications

Foracort Inhaler is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Budesonide, Formoterol, or any component of the formulation. It should not be used as primary treatment for status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma or COPD where intensive measures are required. Not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include headache, tremor, palpitations, pharyngitis, hoarseness, oral candidiasis, and cough. Less frequently, patients may experience muscle cramps, nausea, dizziness, or sleep disturbances. Serious side effects, though rare, can include cardiovascular effects (e.g., angina, hypertension), hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, adrenal suppression, and severe allergic reactions. Immediately report any worsening respiratory symptoms, chest pain, or signs of infection.

Drug interaction

Foracort Inhaler may interact with other medications, including:

  • Beta-blockers (may antagonize bronchodilator effects)
  • Diuretics or corticosteroids (may increase risk of hypokalemia)
  • MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants (may potentiate cardiovascular effects)
  • Ketoconazole and other CYP3A4 inhibitors (may increase Budesonide exposure)
  • QT-prolonging drugs (may increase risk of arrhythmias)

Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one. Resume the regular dosing schedule.

Overdose

Overdose may lead to excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation, presenting as angina, hypertension, hypokalemia, seizures, or tachycardia. Corticosteroid overdose may result in hypercorticism. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Cardiac monitoring may be necessary. There is no specific antidote.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Keep the canister away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not puncture, break, or incinerate, even when empty. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
