Mircette is a combination oral contraceptive pill prescribed for the prevention of pregnancy. It contains a progestin (desogestrel) and an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and is recognized for its low-hormone formulation, which is designed to reduce common estrogen-related side effects while maintaining high efficacy. This monophasic regimen offers a simplified dosing schedule and is often selected for patients seeking a well-tolerated option with a favorable side effect profile. Healthcare providers value its balance of contraceptive reliability and patient comfort.

Features

  • Active ingredients: Ethinyl estradiol 20 mcg and desogestrel 0.15 mg
  • Monophasic formulation: Each active pill contains the same hormone dose
  • 28-day regimen: 21 active pills followed by 2 inert pills and 5 very low-dose estrogen pills
  • Packaged in a compact, blister card with day-of-week labeling for adherence
  • Prescription-only medication requiring medical supervision

Benefits

  • Provides highly effective pregnancy prevention when taken as directed
  • Low estrogen content reduces the risk of estrogen-dependent side effects such as nausea, bloating, and breast tenderness
  • May result in lighter, more regular menstrual cycles and reduced menstrual cramps
  • The unique dosing schedule (with ethinyl estradiol-only pills at the end) may help minimize hormone withdrawal symptoms
  • Offers non-contraceptive benefits such as potential improvement in acne
  • Supports family planning with reversible and user-controlled administration

Common use

Mircette is primarily indicated for the prevention of pregnancy. It works by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration, and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. It is suitable for women of reproductive age who seek a reliable, daily oral contraceptive. It may also be prescribed off-label for menstrual cycle regulation, management of dysmenorrhea, or treatment of moderate acne in women seeking contraception.

Dosage and direction

Take one pill daily at approximately the same time each day, for 28 consecutive days. Begin with the first active pill in the top row on the first day of menstruation or as directed by a healthcare provider. The pack contains 21 pink active pills, followed by 2 white inert pills, and then 5 blue pills containing only ethinyl estradiol 10 mcg. Complete the entire pack before starting a new one. Use a backup contraceptive method (e.g., condoms) for the first 7 days of the first cycle or if a pill is missed.

Precautions

  • Notify your healthcare provider before starting Mircette if you smoke, are over age 35, or have a history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, or certain cancers.
  • Regular blood pressure checks are recommended while using this medication.
  • May affect glucose tolerance; patients with diabetes should be monitored closely.
  • Use with caution in patients with conditions influenced by fluid retention (e.g., migraine, epilepsy, asthma, cardiac or renal dysfunction).
  • Reduced efficacy may occur with gastrointestinal illnesses (e.g., vomiting or diarrhea); use backup contraception.

Contraindications

  • History of or current thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders
  • Known or suspected carcinoma of the breast or estrogen-dependent neoplasia
  • Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
  • History of or current cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease
  • Impaired liver function, liver tumors, or active liver disease
  • Known or suspected pregnancy
  • Hypersensitivity to any component of Mircette

Possible side effects

Missed dose

If one active pill is missed (24–48 hours late): Take it as soon as remembered, and take the next pill at the usual time. No backup contraception is needed.

If two active pills are missed in weeks 1 or 2: Take two pills as soon as remembered and two pills the next day. Then resume the regular schedule. Use backup contraception for 7 days.

If two active pills are missed in week 3, or three or more active pills are missed at any time: Discard the current pack and start a new pack on the same day. Use backup contraception for 7 days. Consider emergency contraception if unprotected intercourse occurred.

If any of the inert (white) or low-estrogen (blue) pills are missed: Discard the missed pill(s) and continue taking one pill daily. No backup contraception is needed.

Overdose

Serious ill effects from overdose are not expected. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding. There is no specific antidote. Symptomatic and supportive care is recommended. Contact a poison control center or healthcare provider for guidance.
