Proscalpin (finasteride 1mg) is an oral prescription medication specifically formulated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men. It is the generic equivalent of the branded product Propecia®, containing the same active ingredient at the same therapeutic dosage. By targeting the primary hormonal pathway responsible for hair follicle miniaturization, Proscalpin offers a scientifically-backed approach to slowing hair loss progression and stimulating regrowth in the vertex and anterior mid-scalp areas. Its efficacy is supported by extensive clinical trials, establishing it as a cornerstone in the medical management of this common condition.

Features

  • Contains 1mg of finasteride, the FDA-approved active ingredient for male pattern hair loss
  • Oral tablet formulation for once-daily systemic administration
  • Generic medication offering bioequivalence to the branded counterpart
  • Typically supplied in a 30-tablet or 90-tablet monthly pack
  • Manufactured under strict pharmaceutical quality control standards (cGMP)

Benefits

  • Promotes visible hair regrowth in a significant proportion of men with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia.
  • Effectively slows the progression of hair loss by addressing its root hormonal cause.
  • Helps to increase hair count and improve overall scalp coverage over sustained use.
  • Provides a convenient, non-surgical, and evidence-based treatment option.
  • Can improve patient self-esteem and quality of life by mitigating the cosmetic impact of hair loss.
  • Offers a cost-effective alternative to branded finasteride, enhancing treatment accessibility.

Common use

Proscalpin is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. It is used to increase hair growth on the scalp and to prevent further hair loss. Clinical benefits are primarily observed in men with hair loss in the vertex (top of the scalp) and the anterior mid-scalp area. Treatment is most effective for those who begin therapy early in the hair loss process. It is not indicated for use by women or children. A clinical response may not be observed immediately; continuous use for at least three months is typically required before initial improvements can be seen, and further improvement may be observed through months 6 to 12 of treatment.

Dosage and direction

The recommended dosage is one 1mg tablet taken orally once a day, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; it should not be crushed or chewed. For maximum efficacy, daily adherence to the dosing schedule is crucial. Treatment must be continued to sustain benefit. If treatment is stopped, the gained hair will likely be lost within 12 months. The dosage is not adjusted for age or renal impairment, but use in the elderly is not recommended as it is not indicated for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), for which a 5mg dose is used.

Precautions

Prior to initiating treatment, a proper diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia should be confirmed. Patients should be informed that they may experience a temporary increase in hair shedding at the beginning of treatment; this is often a sign that the medication is beginning to work and is typically followed by a growth phase. Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets due to the risk of absorption and potential teratogenic effects on a male fetus. Patients should have appropriate expectations; results vary and not all men will respond to treatment. Regular follow-up with a prescribing physician is advised to monitor progress and discuss any concerns.

Contraindications

Proscalpin is contraindicated in the following populations:

  • Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant. Finasteride can cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male fetus.
  • Pediatric patients.
  • Patients with hypersensitivity to finasteride or any other 5α-reductase inhibitor, or to any of the excipients in the tablet formulation.
  • Patients with existing severe hepatic impairment.

Possible side effects

Like all medicines, Proscalpin can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following adverse reactions are based on clinical trial data and post-marketing experience.

Common (May affect up to 1 in 10 users):

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Decreased libido (sex drive)
  • Problems with ejaculation, such as decreased volume of ejaculate

Uncommon (May affect up to 1 in 100 users):

  • Breast tenderness and enlargement (gynecomastia)
  • Depression
  • Skin rash

Rare:

  • Allergic reactions, including lip swelling and skin rash
  • Testicular pain
  • Palpitations

A small number of men reported that sexual side effects persisted after they stopped taking finasteride. Patients should discuss any side effects with their doctor.

Drug interaction

Formal drug interaction studies have been conducted. However, no clinically significant drug interactions have been identified to date. Specifically, no interactions were observed with antipyrine, digoxin, propranolol, theophylline, or warfarin. Caution is advised when finasteride is used concomitantly with potent inhibitors of the CYP3A4 enzyme system (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir). Always inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, it should be skipped and the next dose should be taken at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Maintaining a consistent daily routine, such as taking the tablet at the same time each day, can help prevent missed doses.

Overdose

In the event of a known or suspected overdose, contact a healthcare professional or poison control center immediately. While no specific symptoms of overdose have been defined, based on the drug’s profile, symptoms could include those related to its pharmacological action. Single doses of finasteride up to 400 mg and multiple doses up to 80 mg/day for three months have been administered without adverse effect. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.

Storage

Store below 30°C (86°F). Keep the tablets in their original blister pack or bottle to protect them from light and moisture. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the packaging. Do not dispose of medications via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use.
