Levitra (vardenafil HCl) is a prescription medication specifically formulated to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. As a potent and selective phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, it works by increasing blood flow to the penis, facilitating the achievement and maintenance of an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Clinical studies demonstrate its efficacy across a broad range of patients, including those with underlying conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. It is not an aphrodisiac and requires sexual stimulation to be effective.
Features
- Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient: Vardenafil hydrochloride.
- Available Dosage Strengths: 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg film-coated tablets.
- Rapid Onset of Action: Can start working in as little as 25-60 minutes.
- Extended Duration: Effective for up to 4-5 hours post-administration.
- Administration: Oral tablet, taken with or without food (though high-fat meals may delay absorption).
- Manufacturer: Originally developed and manufactured by Bayer AG.
Benefits
- Provides a highly reliable and effective solution for achieving and sustaining erections.
- Offers a rapid onset of action, allowing for greater spontaneity in sexual activity.
- Demonstrates consistent efficacy in men with ED, including challenging cases like post-prostatectomy or diabetic neuropathy.
- The effects are temporary and specific, supporting natural sexual function only when desired.
- Available in multiple dosages, allowing for personalized treatment plans under medical supervision.
- Can contribute significantly to improved sexual satisfaction and overall relationship quality.
Common use
Levitra is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the recurrent inability to achieve or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. It is used on an as-needed basis by adult males. Its use is predicated on the presence of sexual stimulation; it will not cause an erection spontaneously. Diagnosis of ED should be confirmed by a healthcare professional to rule out other underlying physiological or psychological causes before initiating treatment.
Dosage and direction
The recommended starting dose for most patients is 10 mg, taken orally approximately 60 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. The dosage may be increased to a maximum recommended dose of 20 mg or decreased to 5 mg based on efficacy and tolerability. The dosing frequency should not exceed once per 24-hour period. For patients aged 65 and over, or those with hepatic impairment, a starting dose of 5 mg is recommended. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water; it is not to be split, crushed, or chewed.
Precautions
- Prior to prescribing, a thorough medical history and physical examination should be conducted to assess cardiovascular status, as sexual activity carries potential cardiac risk.
- Use with caution in patients with anatomical deformation of the penis (e.g., angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, or Peyronie’s disease) or conditions predisposing them to priapism (e.g., sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia).
- Advise patients to avoid excessive alcohol consumption (e.g., 5 units or more) while taking Levitra, as it may increase the risk of orthostatic hypotension, dizziness, and increased heart rate.
- Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) has been reported post-marketing in association with PDE5 inhibitor use. Patients should be advised to seek immediate medical attention in the event of sudden vision loss in one or both eyes.
- Sudden decrease or loss of hearing has been reported. Patients should stop taking Levitra and seek prompt medical attention if such symptoms occur.
Contraindications
Levitra is strictly contraindicated in the following patient populations:
- Patients using any form of organic nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate or dinitrate) or nitric oxide donors regularly or intermittently. Concomitant use can cause a profound and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure.
- Patients using guanylate cyclase stimulators, such as riociguat.
- Patients with a known hypersensitivity to vardenafil or any of the tablet’s excipients.
- Patients with severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh Class C).
- Patients with end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.
Possible side effect
Like all medications, Levitra can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Most are mild to moderate and transient.
- Very Common (≥1/10): Headache.
- Common (≥1/100 to <1/10): Flushing, dizziness, dyspepsia (indigestion), nasal congestion, rhinitis, myalgia (muscle ache), back pain.
- Uncommon (≥1/1,000 to <1/100): Palpitations, tachycardia (increased heart rate), nausea, elevated liver enzymes, blurred vision, changes in color vision (cyanopsia), photophobia, erectile duration exceeding 4 hours (requires medical attention if prolonged).
- Rare (≥1/10,000 to <1/1,000): Hypotension, syncope (fainting), priapism (a prolonged and painful erection lasting more than 4 hours; constitutes a medical emergency), rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
- Frequency not known: Sudden hearing loss, NAION.
Drug interaction
Concomitant use of Levitra with other medications requires careful consideration due to its effects on the cytochrome P450 system (primarily CYP3A4).
- Nitrates: Absolute contraindication. Potentially life-threatening hypotension.
- Alpha-blockers: (e.g., doxazosin, tamsulosin). Concomitant use can lead to symptomatic hypotension. Dose adjustment and careful titration are necessary.
- Potent CYP3A4 Inhibitors: (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, indinavir, ritonavir, clarithromycin). Concomitant use significantly increases vardenafil plasma concentration. The dose of Levitra should not exceed 5 mg in a 24-hour period when co-administered.
- Moderate CYP3A4 Inhibitors: (e.g., erythromycin, aprepitant, fluconazole). A maximum dose of 5 mg is recommended.
- Other Antihypertensives: Additive blood pressure-lowering effects are possible.
- Guanylate Cyclase Stimulators (e.g., riociguat): Contraindicated due to the risk of symptomatic hypotension.
Missed dose
Levitra is not intended for scheduled daily dosing; it is taken on an as-needed basis. Therefore, the concept of a “missed dose” does not apply. Take the tablet approximately 60 minutes before planned sexual activity. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
In cases of suspected overdose, standard supportive measures should be adopted. Given that vardenafil is a vasodilator, the primary expected signs and symptoms would be related to its hemodynamic effects, including severe hypotension, dizziness, syncope, and potentially reflex tachycardia. Management should include placing the patient in the supine position with the legs elevated to restore blood pressure and ensure vital organ perfusion. Hemodialysis is not expected to accelerate clearance as vardenafil is highly protein-bound.
Storage
- Store Levitra tablets in the original blister packaging at room temperature (15°C to 30°C or 59°F to 86°F).
- Protect from light and moisture.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging.

Reviews
“After being diagnosed with ED following prostate surgery, my urologist prescribed Levitra. The 10mg dose has been consistently effective for me, allowing for a normal sex life with my partner. The onset is quick, and I’ve experienced only minor flushing as a side effect.” – John D., 58
“As a diabetic, I had struggled with ED for years. Other treatments provided inconsistent results. Switching to Levitra 20mg was a game-changer. The reliability is its biggest benefit for me. I take it about an hour beforehand and it works every time.” – Robert T., 62
“I was initially prescribed a different medication but experienced unpleasant headaches. My doctor suggested we try Levitra 5mg. The lower dose is perfectly effective for me and the side effects are virtually nonexistent. It’s restored my confidence completely.” – Mark S., 45
