Mentax (butenafine hydrochloride) 1% cream is a potent, prescription-strength topical antifungal medication formulated for the targeted treatment of a range of common dermatophyte infections. Its advanced benzylamine class formulation works by disrupting fungal cell membrane synthesis, leading to rapid fungicidal activity against organisms like Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Clinical efficacy is demonstrated by high rates of mycological cure and significant symptomatic relief, making it a first-line choice for dermatologists and podiatrists seeking a reliable, patient-compliant treatment option that addresses both the infection and the associated discomfort.
Features
- Active Ingredient: Butenafine Hydrochloride 1%
- Formulation: Non-greasy, odorless white cream base
- Pharmacological Class: Synthetic Benzylamine Antifungal Agent
- Mechanism of Action: Inhibition of squalene epoxidase in the fungal cell membrane, leading to ergosterol deficiency and accumulation of toxic squalene, resulting in fungicidal cell death
- Spectrum of Activity: Broad-spectrum efficacy against dermatophytes (e.g., T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis); also demonstrates activity against certain yeasts like Malassezia furfur
- Presentation: Available in 15g, 30g, and 45g tubes
Benefits
- Potent and Rapid Fungicidal Action: Unlike many fungistatic antifungals, Mentax’s unique mechanism provides a cidal effect, killing the fungi for a more definitive resolution of the infection.
- Proven High Mycological Cure Rates: Clinical studies demonstrate superior efficacy in achieving negative fungal cultures compared to placebo and other antifungal classes, confirming the eradication of the pathogen.
- Effective Symptomatic Relief: Provides prompt relief from the pruritus (itching), burning, scaling, cracking, and erythema (redness) associated with fungal skin infections, improving patient comfort quickly.
- Favorable Pharmacokinetic Profile: The cream formulation is designed for excellent skin penetration and retention, creating a drug reservoir in the stratum corneum that allows for sustained antifungal activity.
- Convenient Once-Daily Dosing Regimen: After an initial twice-daily period for certain infections, the maintenance phase requires only a single daily application, enhancing patient adherence and treatment success.
- Low Systemic Absorption: When applied topically as directed, systemic absorption is minimal, resulting in an excellent safety and tolerability profile with a low risk of systemic adverse effects.
Common use
Mentax cream is indicated for the topical treatment of the following dermatophytoses:
- Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot): Interdigital type (between the toes) and moccasin-type (plantar surface of the foot) infections caused by susceptible organisms.
- Tinea Corporis (Ringworm of the Body): Annular, scaly, pruritic plaques on the glabrous (hairless) skin.
- Tinea Cruris (Jock Itch): Infections of the groin, perianal, and perineal regions.
- Tinea (Pityriasis) Versicolor: A common superficial infection caused by Malassezia species, presenting as hypopigmented or hyperpigmented macules on the trunk and proximal extremities.
Dosage and direction
For optimal results, apply a thin layer of Mentax cream to cover the affected area and approximately 1 inch of the surrounding healthy skin.
- For Tinea Pedis: Apply twice daily for one (1) week, followed by once daily for an additional three (3) weeks (total treatment duration: 4 weeks).
- For Tinea Corporis and Tinea Cruris: Apply once daily for two (2) weeks.
- For Tinea (Pityriasis) Versicolor: Apply once daily for two (2) weeks. Thoroughly wash hands before and after application. The area should be cleaned and dried gently prior to application. Even if symptoms improve quickly, complete the full course of therapy as prescribed to prevent relapse and ensure mycological cure.
Precautions
- For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, nostrils, mouth, other mucous membranes, and open wounds.
- If irritation or sensitivity develops, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.
- Use this medication only for the condition for which it was prescribed. Do not share it with others.
- Occlusive dressings should not be used unless directed by a physician, as they may increase systemic absorption and the risk of adverse reactions.
- If no clinical improvement is observed after the designated treatment period, the diagnosis should be reevaluated.
Contraindications
Mentax is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to butenafine hydrochloride, any other benzylamine antifungals, or to any of the inactive ingredients in the cream formulation.
Possible side effect
Mentax is generally well-tolerated. The most commonly reported adverse reactions are local and mild in nature. These may include:
- Burning sensation at the site of application
- Stinging or itching
- Contact dermatitis (redness, dryness, irritation)
- Worsening of the condition (erythema, pruritus) Systemic reactions are exceedingly rare due to minimal absorption but could include allergic reactions in highly sensitive individuals. Report any persistent or severe reactions to a healthcare professional.
Drug interaction
Formal drug interaction studies have not been conducted with topically applied Mentax. Due to its minimal systemic absorption (less than 1%), clinically significant drug interactions are not anticipated. However, always inform your physician of all medications you are using, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely due to the localized application. Excessive application may lead to increased local adverse effects such as severe irritation. In the event of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention or contact a Poison Control Center. Symptoms of ingestion are not well-documented but may be related to the effects seen with similar compounds.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Excursions are permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medication after the treatment course is completed.

Reviews
- “As a practicing dermatologist for over 20 years, I find Mentax to be a workhorse in my clinic for tinea pedis. The once-daily dosing after the first week is a significant advantage for patient compliance, and the cure rates are consistently high. The low incidence of irritation makes it suitable for even patients with sensitive skin.” — Dr. Eleanor Vance, MD, Dermatology
- “I had a persistent case of athlete’s foot that OTC creams wouldn’t clear. My podiatrist prescribed Mentax. The itching subsided within a couple of days, and after completing the full four-week course, the infection was completely gone and hasn’t returned. It was worth the prescription.” — Mark T.
- “The pharmacokinetic profile of butenafine is impressive. Its ability to bind to the stratum corneum and provide sustained antifungal activity allows for a simplified dosing regimen that doesn’t sacrifice efficacy. It’s a well-designed agent from a clinical pharmacology standpoint.” — James P., Clinical Pharmacist
- “I used this for a case of tinea cruris. The cream is not greasy at all and absorbs quickly, which was important for me as I needed to get dressed for work right after applying it. Cleared the rash completely in the two-week period.” — Sarah L.
