Yasmin is a combined oral contraceptive pill designed to provide highly effective pregnancy prevention while offering the added benefit of improved skin clarity. It contains a balanced formulation of ethinylestradiol and drospirenone, which work synergistically to inhibit ovulation, regulate the menstrual cycle, and reduce androgen-related skin concerns. Trusted by healthcare providers worldwide, Yasmin represents a comprehensive approach to reproductive health and dermatological wellness, making it a preferred choice for individuals seeking dual-purpose contraceptive care.

Features

  • Contains 0.03 mg ethinylestradiol and 3 mg drospirenone per active tablet
  • 21 active tablets and 7 placebo tablets per blister pack
  • Monophasic formulation for consistent hormonal delivery
  • Anti-mineralocorticoid and anti-androgenic properties of drospirenone
  • Packaged with clear day-of-week indicators for ease of use
  • Manufactured under strict pharmaceutical quality standards

Benefits

  • Provides over 99% effective pregnancy prevention when taken correctly
  • Reduces moderate acne vulgaris in women seeking contraception
  • Creates more regular, predictable menstrual cycles with often lighter bleeding
  • Demonstrates anti-androgenic effects that may reduce oil production and hirsutism
  • Offers potential improvement in premenstrual symptoms and water retention
  • Provides non-contraceptive health benefits including reduced risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers

Common use

Yasmin is primarily prescribed for contraception in women of reproductive age. It is particularly suitable for individuals who also experience moderate acne that has not responded adequately to topical treatments. Healthcare providers may recommend Yasmin for menstrual cycle regulation in women without contraindications to combined hormonal contraception. Some practitioners prescribe Yasmin for the management of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) symptoms, though this represents an off-label use that requires careful medical supervision.

Dosage and direction

Take one tablet daily at approximately the same time each day for 28 consecutive days: 21 active tablets followed by 7 placebo tablets. Begin your first pack either on the first day of menstrual bleeding (Day 1 start) or on the first Sunday after menstruation begins (Sunday start). Subsequent packs should begin immediately after finishing the previous pack, without interruption. Tablets may be taken with or without food, but consistency in timing is important for maintaining effectiveness. If gastrointestinal upset occurs, taking with food may improve tolerance.

Precautions

Yasmin increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events including venous thromboembolism, stroke, and myocardial infarction. This risk is highest during the first year of use and when restarting after a four-week or longer hiatus. Smoking significantly increases cardiovascular risks, especially in women over 35 years old. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended, as hypertension may develop or worsen. Liver function should be assessed periodically, as combined oral contraceptives may cause benign hepatic adenomas and rare malignant liver tumors. Women with conditions that may be affected by fluid retention (such as epilepsy, migraine, asthma, or cardiac or renal dysfunction) require careful monitoring.

Missed dose

If one active tablet is missed (24-48 hours late): Take the missed tablet as soon as remembered and continue taking subsequent tablets at the regular time. Additional contraception is not needed.

If two active tablets are missed in weeks 1 or 2: Take two tablets on the day remembered and two tablets the next day. Then resume regular schedule. Use backup contraception for 7 days.

If two active tablets are missed in week 3 OR three or more active tablets are missed: Discard the current pack and start a new pack the same day. Use backup contraception for 7 days. Consider emergency contraception if sexual intercourse occurred in the past 5 days.

If placebo tablets are missed: Discard the missed placebo tablets and continue with the remaining tablets.

Overdose

Serious ill effects have not been reported following acute overdose of oral contraceptives. Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding in females. In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment should be provided. There is no specific antidote. Monitor for hypokalemia or hyperkalemia due to drospirenone content, particularly in patients with renal impairment or those taking medications that affect potassium balance.

Reviews

Clinical studies demonstrate high patient satisfaction with Yasmin, particularly among women seeking both contraception and acne improvement. In randomized controlled trials, 79-85% of women reported significant acne improvement after 6 cycles of treatment. Patient-reported outcomes indicate high rates of cycle regularity and satisfaction with lighter menstrual flow. Some users report improved premenstrual symptoms and reduced water retention. A small percentage of users discontinue due to side effects, primarily in the first three months of use. Long-term users frequently report appreciation for the dual benefits and reliability of protection when taken consistently.
